Master of Science in Actuarial Science

As the needs of the actuarial profession evolve, the skill set of actuaries is used in wider applications in both traditional and non-traditional fields. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of actuaries is projected to grow 22 percent from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations.

The objective of this program is to educate future leaders of the actuarial and risk management industries with a rigorous training through specialized courses in actuarial science, probability and statistics, finance, economics and related fields. Recognized as one of the best actuarial programs nationwide:

  • Students choose our program when
    • They are interested in career advancement and actuarial exam preparation. Our courses are designed to prepare students for the professional actuarial examinations administered by the Society of Actuaries (SOA) and the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS).
    • They want a broader education than just the actuarial exam topics, and may want to prepare for financial or management positions, or the option for further graduate work.
  • Graduate program is well suited for career changers who intend to pursue fast-track actuarial credentials with no prior actuarial background.
  • Students can opt to take SOA approved classes required for VEE (Validation of Educational Experience) credits in statistics, accounting/ finance, and economics.

Summer Internship

Actuarial science students are encouraged to hold internships and participate in networking events. UT Dallas offers many tools to students to help them find and obtain internships and jobs, including a dedicated Career Center that can help with resumé building and interviewing skills. Handshake is our Career Center’s new one-stop-shop career services network.

Our actuarial program has developed a close working relationship with insurance companies and consulting firms in the southwest over the years. Actuarial career events at UT Dallas provide a great platform for students to network with actuaries, and help secure internships and entry level jobs. Furthermore, our risk management/actuarial science fraternity, Gamma Iota Sigma (Beta Phi Chapter), sponsors an employer/student mixer in the fall semester. Dallas is a major hub for insurance companies and actuarial consulting firms. UT Dallas’ location is a tremendous advantage for students.
